One of the most important questions obviously must be in your mind which should be there, why you should use the test made by us? Professor N.K. Chadha and Dr. Dalip Singh, when there are other tests available in the market. It is not that the emotional intelligence test which we are giving on our platform myemotionaljourney.com, is the only test, there are others also. But our instrument is unique and most scientific in nature, which I can say with authority and integrity. Why am I saying this thing?
First, this is the only instrument I would say, which has been developed on the Indian population; on you. There are other tests, foreign tests available but those tests should be adapted scientifically. The second part of this instrument is that we have ensured the five most important ingredients of a good psychometric tool, which are essential components. And I want to tell you, people, these ingredients, if you like to use some of the tests, then you are free, everyone has freedom but the danger I want to insure you. What is that?
The first ingredient of any good psychometric test is the standardization process, which means the universe on which this system has been developed; what was the population used? We have used the population of adolescents for the adolescence test. For adults, we have used the adult population i.e., the population from 20+ onwards up to the age of 80. For an adolescent, our population is 13 to 19 years. Another thing, we have ensured to take boys and girls adolescent; men and women adult. So, we have taken gender into consideration. The third important component of this instrument is that this instrument having a relationship with the basic definition of emotional intelligence which we have coined. That is emotional maturity, sensitivity, and competency. So, we assess all three components. So, when you go to the platform and do your assessment, you will find the value and the interpretation of all three components. Again, I am repeating, emotional maturity, sensitivity, and competency plus in totality, emotional intelligence. This is part of the standardization process. Our definition of emotional intelligence which we are assessing is in line with our cultural setting. It suits our cultural setting. Then, a set of psychologists were involved in dropping the items which are there on our platform; 22 situations were given in the adult instrument, and 60 were given in the adolescent instrument. It is not that we have 60 or 22, we started with more than 500 situations. Then, by applying all psychometric properties, which I will share with you shortly, we have ensured and then keep on dropping those items, those statements which are not relevant and do not predict emotional intelligence. That is the standardization process. One more component in the standardization process, what we have ensured is that this test which is there in front of you on the platform, this is not been developed in the last six months or one year. This has been developed more than 20 years back and more than approximately 1 lakh people across the world have already undergone the assessment through that. So that is a strong point. The second ingredient which is very essential is the item’s properties. In technical terms, we call it item analysis. This has four components - which means one is item difficulty, second item discrimination, third item reliability, and fourth item validity. We ensure them, scientifically based on a large sample size that each question that we are retaining should be linked with the totality of the concept through which we are going to assess it. That is very essential; this is the component you have to see. Then the third psychometric property which we have taken into consideration is test reliability, the instrumental reliability. We are establishing the instrumental reliability on a different population and tool reliability we have obtained calculated indexes given which is over 0.9 which is split-half reliability and test-retest reliability. Split-half reliability will tell you the consistency of the instrument. Whether part one of the instruments, the 10 questions, or whether 11 questions are related to the other 11 questions. Okay, so that is the internal consistency. Temporary stability; can this test be applied only once? We established the retest reliability, that this test can be used repeatedly over the years. And that is why sometimes we advise when we do counselling with our clients, we tell them to repeat after 6 months. Make modifications for the questions given in the profile plus we also say that do it yourself! See if the change has come or not. If not, we can discuss why? If come, then continue with the journey. The fourth psychometric property we ensure is item validity. Item validity is nothing but, if a test is known to be valid, if it measures what it is supposed to compare to a standard. For this, we have ensured - the face validity of the instrument; their content validity; we have taken the person into consideration; we have determined the concurrent validity. Let me share what validity is if you are not psychology background. An instrument is known to be valid when it assesses what it is supposed to when compared to a standard as discussed above. And here, in this case, we have 3 different kinds of validities - one is face validity; the second is content validity through judges’ rating and the third is concurrent validity over a period which makes accurate predictions. And, there is a 97% prediction you can find from this instrument. So, all these precautions and concerns have been taken into consideration and then we came with the test. When dropping the test, we have taken a large sample at the initial item selection, and we removed the social desirability. We have ensured that no item in the test is socially desirable or socially undesirable i.e., a person giving the right answer is compelled to give a socially correct answer. We have also tried to ensure on a scale of 9-point, technically known as a psychometric scale, we remove the 1,2,3, and high 7-9 and have taken 4,5,6 into consideration. So, these are the psychometric properties and I hope you will enjoy doing the assessment and get an accurate picture as that is our purpose. Me and Dr. Dalip Singh, that is our commitment to helping our people, our country, and our society as a whole.
